A.As A Past Student

* A paragon of dignity and authority.
* Strict but fair disciplinarian.
* Authoritative but not authoritarian.
* A brilliant teacher and lecturer excelling in English literature.
* Used humour effectively to drive his point.
* Keen on opening opportunities and developing talent even bent the rules to do so [ex-Lovedale strikers](e.g. Section 10; Science
Subjects; Teachers).
* Also tried to develop skills in drama for students and teachers.
* Keen sportsperson [Rugby, Athletics, Softball, Netball, Tennis and Cricket] (Newell vs- Limekhaya 1963 & 1972).
* Students, Staff and parents had great respect for him he remained humble.

B.As A Colleague(At Fort Hare)

* A doer more than a teacher.
* Spent most of his time in his office working.
* A good leader, skilful in dealing with difficult socio-political issues. (Different approaches to doing things e.g. Struggle, rights and
fairness/equal opportunities).
* Led at Fort Hare and other campuses (SABUSA President).
* Backstage worker.
* Sensitive to social needs, but patient and civil in dealing with opposition.

C.As A Friend and Parent

* Was a fellow Presbyterian who worshipped and served the Lord quietly.
* Was up to date with what was happening in life and took time to discuss it quietly More of a listener than talker.
* Respectful of old and young, rich and poor, educated and uneducated.
* Loved his family and children and all young people.
* We all loved R.L. as a teacher, friend, parent and leader.

To His Family and Friends

Today your heart is heavy
 With sorrow and grief,
 But as days turn to months
 May you find sweet relief
 In knowing that your loved one
Is not far away,
 But is with you in Spirit
 Every hour of the day.

REST IN PEACE
